Should You Add Hemp to Your Smoothies? Yoga Girl’s Dreamy Recipe

Smoothies are the perfect way to nourish your body — and enjoy how it tastes! It wouldn’t be a Yoga Girl® smoothie without some experimentation... My favorite find and new smoothie staple? Hemp! Here’s my favorite dreamy recipe for this superfood.

I love creating.

I may not be an artist with a paintbrush, but I love mixing the perfect playlist for a sweaty Vinyasa Flow or a healing restorative yoga class. I love coming up with creative yoga sequences, video or photo shoot projects, and, as a serial entrepreneur, businesses that make the world a better place.

One of my absolute favorite places to make magic happen is in my own kitchen.

I love food, and I love seeing how ingredients can be mixed and matched into something that’s both incredible tasty and super healthy — it’s very rewarding to prove that the two can coexist!

Sometimes my recipes look beautiful! Other times...they don't.

But the other day I struck gold... I made a gorgeous smoothie. I'm naming it The Hemp Dream because it was just so dreamily delicious!

It's super simple and easy to make, protein rich, filling and a great way to get some hemp into your diet.

First off, don't let the word "hemp" scare you off (I always get questions about this whenever I share a recipe that includes hemp, so I thought I'd specify).

Hemp is related to marijuana, yes, but although they are different varieties of the same plant (Cannabis sativa L), they have very little in common. I read this comparison that makes it very clear:

“There are different varieties of Cannabis, just as Chihuahuas and wolves are different breeds of Canis lupus!”

Actually, it has a ton of health benefits! I use hemp seeds and hemp milk in the kitchen all the time.

Hemp seeds are a complete protein and have a concentrated balance of proteins, essential fats, vitamins and enzymes. Hemp is a superfood!

And the benefits of this smoothie don’t stop with the hemp.

Kale is one of the most nutrient-dense superfoods on this planet. It feeds your body protein and potassium (great for your muscles pre- or post-workout), zinc (great for your immune system), fiber, vitamins A, B, C and K, omega-3 fatty acids and nutrients that keep your eyesight healthy.

Bananas are also full of potassium and fiber, and they contain prebiotics, which feed the probiotics in your gut (the good bacteria that you want to thrive). Plus, it adds the perfect amount of sweetness to this recipe!

If you ask my best friend Olivia, she’ll say peanut butter is where it’s at. But I disagree. Almond butter is my number 1 choice — for the flavor and the health benefits! It contains biotin, which helps the body process sugars, proteins and fats. It’s great for your skin and your blood sugar, too!

Try my Hemp Dream smoothie for a late afternoon energy boost or a post-yoga snack. It’s a treat for your tastebuds, your body and your spirit!

The Yoga Girl® Kitchen: Hemp Dream Smoothie

Serves 1-2

The Ingredients:

  • 2 large bananas
  • Hemp milk
  • 1 tbsp hemp seeds
  • 2 tbsp almond butter
  • 1 cup shredded kale
  • Ice

The Process:

  1. Put all ingredients together in a blender, but only add a little bit of hemp milk at a time. You don't want your smoothie to become too watery, so use just enough to create the perfect consistency.
  2. Mix, serve and enjoy!
