Want to Connect With Your intuition? Wake up Before the Sun

Waking up before sunrise is my favorite way to connect with my intuition. The magic at dawn is like nothing else. When was the last time you experienced it?

“The breezes at dawn have secrets to tell you

Don't go back to sleep!

You must ask for what you really want.

Don't go back to sleep!

People are going back and forth

across the doorsill where the two worlds touch,

The door is round and open

Don't go back to sleep!” - Rumi

I wake up before sunrise almost every single day—not to work out, or sweat, or “get more things done” (although sometimes my mind tricks me into thinking that would be a more effective use of my mornings).

__I get up before sunrise so that I can sit in silence. __

It’s pitch black outside when I get out of bed. It’s hard. When it first goes off, I curse that damn alarm clock and negotiate with myself, “Five more minutes;” “This is ridiculous;” “You need the extra sleep;” “Just go back to bed.”

But then I make myself open my eyes, throw off the covers and stand up. And from there, it’s easy.

I make a cup of tea. I cuddle the one dog who enjoys early mornings (Laika). I roll out my yoga mat on the back porch.

And then, I sit. And I breathe. Sometimes I stretch. Sometimes I move. Sometimes I flow through a whole big practice.

Most of the time, I just watch the world wake up around me. There is a moment before the first rays of sun filter through the cactus, when the sky looks something like this: colorful in a way that takes your breath away; brushstrokes of orange, pink and purple on a dark blue canvas. So much color. The sliver of the moon still lingers above me.

The whole thing lasts just a moment; if I look away, I miss it.

It’s magical.

And then, it’s gone. The world gets bright, the sun comes up, and I’m reminded that this sky happens every morning and if I’m not awake, I miss a chance to wake up in awe of this universe.

Sitting in silence, observing your surroundings and your breath, it brings clarity. My sacred sunrise mornings have brought me profound answers in the moments when I struggled at a crossroad or let the world get so loud around me that I couldn’t hear my own intuition.

The more you listen to what everyone around you thinks, the harder it will be for you to distinguish what you actually want. When you see this happening in your life, spend less time asking other people for advice. Spend more time in silence, listening to what if feels like to be right here, right now.

Sitting with the rising sun is the perfect time to do just that.

The mesmerizing sky is worth the effort to rise early on its own—that reconnection with the incredible magic that is flowing all around us all the time. But there’s something even more powerful, and it’s the main reason why I sit with the sky as it turns from night to day. It happens after I breathe through a pranayama that’s calling to me, after I move my body a little or a lot, after I simply sit and let myself be..

Before I roll my mat up, the baby wakes and regular life resumes, I speak my gratitude out loud.

That 5 a.m. alarm clock is at the top of my list of important things to do to connect with divinity and manifest more of it, every single day.

Just looking at the sorbet morning sky makes me wonder, what else is nature doing when I’m not watching? I can’t recommend it enough—catch more sunrises this year. We only get so many in a lifetime, and each one has a message to tell, an opportunity to RISE and S H I N E!

Rise, babies. Rise early, connect with your spirit, then take action. It’s worth it.
