Back when I traveled 40+ weeks out of the year to teach internationally, I quickly learned how taxing living in hotels and planes can be. Always on the go to a new city, hotel and bed, living out of a suitcase, wearing the same sweater 3 days in a row… It’s all super exciting at first, but underneath it all I started to feel too uprooted and drained.

I wanted to always show up energized and grounded for my classes and meetings, and I wanted to enjoy experiencing all the sites!

So, I made a list of all the things I needed to feel my best while staying in a hotel far from home.

Whenever I book hotels, I always request the following things in advance:

1. Kettle

2. Small fridge (hotels will almost always accommodate this)

3. Bathtub (if available)

4. Balcony (if affordable)

The kettle allows me to make my own tea and hot lemon water first thing in the morning (my favorite way to start the day) and last thing before bed. Starting and ending the day with warm tea is everything!

With a fridge available, I can stock up on healthy snacks. I usually head to a local grocery store right after I’ve arrived to buy necessities like fruits, veggies, hummus, vegan yoghurt and coconut water. Eating pre-packaged foods or super pricey health foods can really dampen a trip! It’s so good to keep up your health - and your mood - by having fresh foods around.

If there isn’t a fridge available, I empty the contents of the mini bar and squeeze my things in there.

If the room has a balcony, it’s magic; we can sit outside, I can meditate and practice yoga, or we can at least let in fresh air to clear the space. I spend so much time outside at home, being able to easily access fresh air makes a hotel room feel calmer and more familiar.

And the bathtub! Oh, bathtubs. I will literally choose hotels based on bathtub availability. Before I got my bathtub at home, part of the big reasons why I looked forward to a trip was because I would be able to soak in a hot bath.

Before I go to bed each night, I light candles and sprinkle a few drops of essential oils into the hot water… It’s HEAVEN after a long day. I’m telling you… Book a hotel with a bathtub. Game. Changer.

If there isn’t a bathtub, I use essential oils in the shower – lavender to calm in the evenings and eucalyptus to energize in the mornings. It’s like an on-the-go spa!

Bringing some of your lifestyle from home with you on the road can drastically change a trip for the better! These 4 things – kettle, fridge, bathtub, balcony – have done the trick on hundreds of my trips and counting.

I always pack crystals, angel cards and Palo Santo to make my hotel room yoga practices feel like home, too.
