Are You Successful? Translation: How Are You Serving the World?
We need to stop thinking of how to become successful and start thinking of how to succeed in helping the world.
What does success look like in your mind? How do you know when you’ve achieved success? The common picture of success involves owning expensive things. You have all the things you ever wanted and then some. You’ve hit success! Or, success is sitting back, feet up, doing nothing. You’ve done it all! You’re accomplished; you’re successful.
When I hear the word successful and close my eyes, I see something different. I see a hell of a lot of work that won’t stop until there is no more suffering. It's a daily devotion. If I contribute to peace and love today, then I’m laying down one brick of success with many, many more to go.
So, are you successful?
Am I?
Sometimes I don’t feel like I am. There are times when I feel like I’m caught in a whirlwind of doing, doing, doing; I work too hard, things are crazy and I never rest. Sometimes I get overwhelmed by what my life has become.
But then there are moments when things come to fruition and start to make sense. So much sense.
Moments when I can see how everything I do and every idea I’ve had and decided to roll with have really, truly meant something. It all has its perfect place in a perfect puzzle. Brick by brick, I am manifesting success because I am focusing on service.
I regularly get flooded with emails from people that want to leave their lives behind and work for a non-profit. They want to dedicate their time to volunteer work or supporting important causes. People are changing their perception of what they want to do with their lives, and I get to play a small part in that!
What I love most about having 2 million followers on Instagram is that all these people that see my posts, read my words and follow my life might get inspired to go create something really good with their own lives and help lay down more bricks of change.
Instead of wanting to be a model, a celebrity, famous, thin, beautiful or rich, maybe, just maybe there are some people out there that follow my life and get inspired - not to become famous, but to change the world.
Because the truth is we don’t need more models or celebrities.
We don’t need more people selling us detox teas, fake lips, fitness apps and hollow surfaces. We need more people that look at the world they live in and realize they want to do more. People that want to be of service. Of real, actual, genuine service.
Did you know half of the population on this earth lives on less than $2.50 a day?? If you’re reading this, chances are you spend twice that on your cup of coffee in the morning.
Our perception of the world is so fucking small. It’s nothing, unless we actively stretch it every damn day.
There is a whole planet out there with beating hearts that struggle every day just to live. Do you realize the immense power you hold to help other beings? To fight for others instead of just yourself? To make a real change?
Imagine what we could do, the power we would possess, if we all realized that we are, in fact, in this together.
It’s time to change the definition of success. To hold each other accountable to showing up for our brothers and sisters and making our world less painful and more loving.
So, are you ready to be successful?
“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don’t have to know Einstein’s “Theory of Relativity” to serve. You don’t have to know the Second Theory of Thermodynamics in Physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr
