About the Episode

When you’re on a plane, the rules are clear: always apply your own oxygen mask first before helping others.

Life happens to work the same way! If you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t expect to be a good partner, parent, friend or colleague.

This week, our focus is on self-care, filling our cups, and taking extra good care of ourselves. Do you need time to rest? Time to play? Time to be alone?

Tune in for a permission slip to do exactly what your soul is craving. Everyone around you will benefit from it, too.

[00:31] Welcome to Yoga Girl Daily and happy Monday! It's a new week, new day. I am a big fan of Mondays actually and I know a lot of people are not, but whenever you give yourself that time to actually make your week purposeful and intentful by setting an intention every Monday, Mondays have a little bit of an extra silver lining to them. This week, I have an intention in mind that's really centered around taking care of ourselves. We've all heard the saying that, you know, on an airplane you need to put on your own oxygen mask first before you help anybody else, including helping your children. And this is such a good metaphor because it's so true in so many ways. We can't help other people or really ever be there for anyone else if we haven't filled our own cup first.

[01:26] So this week I want us to spend extra time really focusing on self-care, on taking care of ourselves, checking in with our own needs every day and doing what we can to really fill our cup each day. Our intention for the week is: This week I will fill my own cup and take extra good care of myself. This week I will fill my own cup and take extra good care of myself. Of course, genuine self-care means different things to each of us. So it's important that you take a moment today to really tune in so you can figure out what is it that you need to fill your cup right now. For me, figuring out whatever changes I need to make in my day to day to really take good care of myself. It's usually about looking at the contrast and where in my life I'm feeling overwhelmed. So if I've had a week where I've felt really spread thin, where I've felt really busy and like I'm going a hundred miles per hour, what I need to fill my own cup is time spent alone.

[02:26] That's a really important thing for me. Time spent alone where I have no distractions, no one that I have to take care of, nothing that needs to get done, but moments spent alone so I can really tune in and listen to my actual needs. It's hard to figure out what we need from minds are busy all the time, so for me at least, having some time spent alone is a really good way of getting there. What is an area in your life where you've felt perhaps overwhelmed, where you've felt a lack of some sort lately and how does that translate to some sort of action you can take to fill your cup in an extra special way this week? Maybe what you need is time to play. Perhaps you've been really overwhelmed with work, staying busy, doing things for work all the time for a really long time, and what you need is some time to be creative, sometime to let your hair down and just play and have fun.

[03:18] Perhaps what you need is to slow down a ton, wind things down, incorporate more rest, more sleep, more downtime in your day to day life. What do you need to fill your cup? On the weeks when I'm having an extra challenging time, I know what I need is a session with my therapist. I need someone to talk to, to vent with, to really get something heavy off of my chest. What do you need to fill your cup? Let's focus on that and actually take a little bit of action around it every single day. So don't let this be an intention that's just floating around in your brain, but something that you can pull into your body and work with every day. That might mean you're incorporating little changes in your everyday life to make sure that you actually put yourself first. It might mean getting up a little earlier in the morning so you have that undisturbed time for yourself to really center into what you need.

[04:08] Maybe to practice some yoga, to meditate, to take a bath, to have a great cup of tea and read a book before you go to work. Some kind of special time for you to take care of yourself. I love setting intentions like this because it's almost like it gives me permission to fill my own cup. Sometimes I, I have this idea in my head that I should be taking care of other people more than I take care of myself. And sometimes self-care comes along with guilt for me. Like every waking moment of the day, I should be with my baby and I shouldn't have any time to myself. So setting this intention, it's like I give myself permission to actually do that every day, to not feel any mom guilt, but to just fill my own cup. I know the entire world would be a brighter place if we all took better care of ourselves. So, let's do that this week. This week, I will fill my own cup and take extra good care of myself. Thank you for setting an intention with me today. Yoga Girl Daily will be back tomorrow.
