About the Episode

The best self-care practices are ones that drop us right into the present moment.

Today’s Feel-Good Friday practice features a poem written by Jennifer Pastiloff on how to make a life.

In seven simple steps, this poem takes you on a journey to live authentically and with your heart wide open. Ultimately, the best way to make a life is live true to you.

[00:04] Welcome to Yoga Girl Daily and happy Feel-Good Friday. We have made it through the work week. It's time for us to drop into the energy of something that will make us feel good. I feel like I'm really on a roll when it comes to these Feel-Good Friday practices to share beautiful pieces of writing that for me really, whenever I come across something that actually genuinely moves my heart, it drops me into the moment. It drops me into that place of being right here right now. So it's a huge part of our meditation practice, I think to continue to anchor into and draw from pieces of writing that deeply inspires us. So the next time you come across something that you're reading or something that someone else is sharing with you and it gives you that moment of total presence, goosebumps, hair, standing up at the back of your arms.

[00:55] Take that as a sign from the universe to just drop in and listen. And it is my hope that these Feel-Good Friday practices, whenever I share something, a quote, a poem, a piece of writing that it can help you drop into that same energy and inspiration as well. Today I have a poem by one of my dearest friends in the world, Jen Pastiloff, she's one of my all-time favorite people. She wrote this piece a long time ago. It's something that every time I read it, it brings tears to my eyes. And if you've never heard this poem before, I know it's going to make your heart just swell with emotion. So this is called: How to Make a Life.

*First, take everything you've ever learned and everything you've yet to discover and place it in a box labeled Thank You.

Second, take a picture of your face and remember that in many years’ time you will be amazed of how gorgeous you were. Be amazed now.

Third, find someplace to live. Make sure it has the ability to let light fall across the room in such a way that every so often you'll stop and mouth the words, “ah, sunlight” before you finish dusting the books. Don't let the books get dusty.

Fourth, fall in love. Touch more than you think. Have a child if you want one. If you don't, don't. Let your child out into the world discovering for themselves just how magical it is or it isn't. It's theirs to decide.

Fifth, get a job. Remember, this job is not who you are.

Sixth, do yoga. Let your body discover what it's like to move without your brain holding its hand. Tell your brain to take a hike. Let your body believe fully in its own powers. Let every person you've stored inside your muscles out every so often to breathe.

Lastly, do things that make you feel good. Let your joy be contagious and spread through your home, your job, your children. Let it spread through the world like a virus so that when you forget it, every so often you'll catch it from someone else. Let's take a moment just to let those words settle and together taking a deep full breath in and out.*

[03:30] How to make a life. Thank you, Jen, for inspiring us all with your beautiful writing. Thank you for listening. I hope this energy sends you into the weekend with your heart wide open. Wishing you a wonderful weekend and Yoga Girl Daily will be back on Monday.
