About the Episode

We are all experiencing an overarching feeling of difficulty right now, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t still facing everyday, ordinary challenges too.

Struggles can find their way into our lives in many different ways - but so can gratitude.

When we look back on our past struggles, there is usually a nugget of gold hidden within it. For today’s episode, we are contemplating and connecting to the challenges we face on an ordinary, day-to-day level, and searching for the silver linings within.

There is always light in the dark, and by acknowledging the smaller moments of gratitude, we can deeply appreciate the bigger ones when they arrive.

[00:36] Welcome to Yoga Girl Daily and happy Thursday! It is Thankful Thursday today, so time for our weekly gratitude practice. This week, I want us to take a moment to focus on something that we have been struggling with lately but where hopefully, or soon, we are very close to realizing that there is something beautiful that comes along with that or a lesson learned. Now, of course, in Coronavirus times we are all struggling with so many things. We have this overarching feeling of challenge moving through all of our lives but at the same time we also have those daily struggles and problems and issues and things that come up in our day to day lives and I don't know about you but I am so very present with the spiritual lessons that are coming my way lately.

[01:31] I think in a time of crisis we are just a little more present with how we are feeling, what we are learning, what is the point of all of these things that are happening in the world right now. And taking a moment to acknowledge the lesson learned or the silver lining that has come along with one of our smaller day to day struggles can help us apply that to the big picture challenges that we are facing right now. So for our gratitude practice today, let's look at a smaller or more of a regular day to day challenge that you have experienced lately. So not one that relates to giant pandemic and the apocalypse and huge fear of everything, but something daily, one of those regular pre Corona times struggles where you actually found a silver lining or where you actually learned something from that struggle. I'm going to give an example of something that is very light but also very, very telling in my life right now.

[02:28] It's teaching me a lot. I have a vegetable garden that I am so invested in right now. It's become the center of my life throughout this pandemic. And over the past couple of weeks I have had a huge struggle with lizards coming into my garden, eating all of my plants and eating all of my vegetables and what actually felt like this huge, huge problem, it became this big thing where every day I'm out in the garden chasing down lizards trying to figure this out and save my garden from being eaten. What I've actually realized for the past few days is that what these lizards have gifted me, you know, beyond the scope of, Oh, this is so frustrating and how can I fix this problem and save my garden? What these lizards have gifted me is this massive amount of presence in an area of my life that is beautiful to me. Honestly, the fact that I've had this struggle in the garden lately has actually led me to be so beyond present in a way that I wasn't with the garden prior to the lizards.

[03:34] Right now I know exactly where each seed is planted. I know every seedling by name, by heart. I know how many bell pepper plants I have, how many eggplants I have, how many watermelons. I know exactly what is happening in my garden. I am more present with my garden, I think, than I am present with anything else in my life and it's allowing me to commune with nature in a way that just wasn't possible before. And I'm sensing so much aliveness in this area of my life. I think really I am cultivating my inner element of earth. All of this really has been made possible from me realizing how fragile everything is, how vulnerable everything is, how actually this garden, it's alive, it's full of life, and it requires my aliveness too, it requires my presence. So this thing that has been a daily struggle that I've been very frustrated with, I'm actually beginning to see the lesson in it.

[04:31] I'm actually beginning to really connect to that silver lining and I know one day soon I will feel really grateful for these lizards and their presence in my life. So that is my personal example. How about you? What is a daily struggle? One of those day to day manageable problems or struggles that you have or recently have had in your life where you can actually find a silver lining, where you can bring in some gratitude. Take today to really contemplate this, maybe journal on it, maybe talk about it or share it with a friend or a family member. How can you find gratitude or what kind of gratitude have you found in a daily struggle lately and just reminding yourself that every problem in every crisis that we find ourselves in there is a nugget of gold. There is some light to be found in that dark place, too. So by acknowledging the smaller problems, the smaller moments of gratitude, we'll be able to apply that to the bigger things as they come our way. There is something to be grateful for also in this challenging time. Thank you so much for practicing gratitude with me today. Please make sure you really let this space of gratitude trickle into the rest of your day, so it's bigger than just a five minute practice, but something that we can live and breathe into action all the time. Yoga Girl Daily will be back tomorrow.
