The People in Our Company

Rachel Brathen
Rachel Brathen

Founder & CEO, Certified Yoga Teacher

Hi! I'm Rachel Brathen; a Swedish native, New York Times best-selling author, serial entrepreneur, and international yoga teacher living in Aruba with my husband Dennis and our baby girl Lea Luna. After graduating from school in Stockholm, I traveled to Costa Rica where I found the joy of incorporating yoga into my everyday life. Deepening my yoga practice and beginning teaching, I moved to Central America where I spent years exploring the intricate studies of yoga and spirituality. After moving to Aruba early 2010, I began teaching yoga full time with my classes being dynamic Vinyasa Flow and focused on integrating alignment, core work, and breathing techniques with basic poses and creative sequencing. My main lesson I aim to teach though, is that asana is only a small piece of the work done in the yoga shala. I incorporate holistic therapeutic tools like sharing, active listening, and journaling in every session and there is a deep level of heart healing at the center of every class I teach. My classes serve the purpose of deepening a connection not only to ourselves, but with the people around us. In 2016, Dennis and I opened [Island Yoga](https://islandyoga.com/) - the largest yoga studio in the Caribbean, where we host yoga teacher trainings, retreats, workshops, and classes year-round. Giving back to the community has always been at the center of all of my initiatives – with the help of awesome staff and volunteers, I run two non-profit organizations: [Sgt. Pepper’s Friends](http://www.sgtpeppersfriends.com/); an animal rescue foundation based in Aruba, and [Yoga Girl® Foundation](https://www.yogagirlfoundation.com/), an organization benefitting women and children in need. I love to share pieces of my life with the world and I do so every day through [social media](https://www.instagram.com/yoga_girl/). I am also the founder of one of the first online yoga platforms, the now-retired oneOeight.com, which was the most successful crowd-funded yoga project of all time. That platform has since grown and transformed into the Yoga Girl site you're experiencing today, and is now made up of a vast [community](https://www.facebook.com/groups/yogagirlcommunity/) of dedicated practitioners from all over the world looking to cultivate balance, create space for inner healing, and to deepen their yoga practice.

Dennis Schoneveld
Dennis Schoneveld

Co-Founder & Director, Certified Yoga Teacher

I was raised in Aruba, but I've traveled a ton since meeting Rachel and starting our business together. After studying business administration in school I put it to use and dabbled in surf and skate shop management I now keep the numbers in line at Island Yoga. I love to make coffee for the Island Yoga staff, and from time to time when I'm actually behind my desk, I watch soccer on my computer. I'm also a certified yoga teacher, talking people through poses every week (something that will resume after my paternity leave ends, in ten years or so). Creating Island Yoga, Yoga Girl, and oneOeight has been a dream of ours for many years. I love watching it come to life! If I'm not chasing Lea Luna around, I'm on my triathlon bike every chance I get.

Lea Luna is Director of Loud Shrieking, Boss of Absolutely Everything, Professional Distractor, Master of Cuddles, Provider of Slobbery Kisses and Expert Downward-Facing Dog Teacher. She has been with the company since March of 2017 and looks forward to taking over as CEO by the year 2031. In her spare time she enjoys long walks on the beach, jumping off scary ledges, screaming the word PAPAYA off the top of her lungs and pretending she didn’t hide mommy’s car keys in the trash bin.

Angela Ryden
Angela Ryden

COO, Certified Yoga Teacher

I am the company COO and the quintessential small town girl next door. In 2017, I officially joined the Yoga Girl group of companies after working as a key driver for yoga and community building in the Nordics (where I happen to meet Rachel & Dennis). I'm an American-Filipino living in Sweden (married to a Swede) and come from humble beginnings. Hard work and gratitude has served me well. For over two decades, I've held a variety of Sr. roles for mid-sized and global companies such as Microsoft Corporation and other start-ups where I learned the ropes of teamwork and adaptability; and I have been fortunate to work with brilliant people to bring forward initiatives and technology programs for brands such as KPMG, Siemens A&D and many more. However, my true calling lies in service and humanity where the real measurements are found in the heart. I wear many hats at Yoga Girl, and there is no job too big or too small. I've been teaching yoga since 2009 and I am a former yoga studio owner. Today, I oversee our global day-to-day operations while balancing motherhood to two amazing children, being a wife, and finding time to roll out my yoga mat.

Executive Assistant, Program Team Content Lead, Certified Yoga Teacher

Hi! I'm Courtney and I'm Rachel's Executive Assistant. I work behind the scenes to keep all the calendars straight, the meetings managed, and the logistics running smoothly. In addition to my role with Yoga Girl, I also frequently support our local animal shelter, Sgt. Pepper's Friends. On the side, I teach SUP yoga and create art - you can find my work gracing the walls at Island Yoga.

Katie Haupt
Katie Haupt

Lead Community Moderator, Lead Digital Content Publisher, Certified Yoga Teacher

Hey everyone! I'm Katie and I'm one of the faces behind much of what you see here and on social media. I'm also the lead admin and moderator for our awesome online communities. I started my yoga journey at age 16, way back in 2003, and pretty much fell in love right away. My first yoga class was the first time I was taught to follow my breath and pay loving attention to my body, and I knew it was something I'd take with me for years to come. I eventually began teaching friends and small groups in 2013, and became certified with the first Yoga Girl training group in 2017. My "why" for teaching has always been to show those that have had challenges in life, that there is always hope, and that there's always a place to return to and find peace. Because of my own troubled upbringing and past dealing with childhood abuse, addiction, depression, anxiety, and trauma, along with plenty of "not enough-ness", my main focus in teaching has always been focused on mental health, releasing shame, and making the practice more inclusive and accessible so that as many people can benefit as possible. While continuing to teach, I started with Yoga Girl in Fall 2018, and now I couldn't be happier to continue sharing my heart, passion, and love with so many as part of this team. My hope for the future is to create bridges for learning, while continuing to stand up to injustice and mistreatment so that we can all live more freely, while expressing the fullest, most authentic versions of ourselves. I'm a Cancer Sun/Virgo Rising/Aries Moon, living in Denver, Colorado with my husband and dog-baby Leo, and when I'm not working or learning new nerdy things, I'm probably asking my husband what we're eating for dinner, obsessing over my plants, writing, or making my billionth music playlist. All love! ♥️

Jessica Rydh
Jessica Rydh

Program Team Floor Leader, Certified Yoga Teacher

Hey, I'm Jess and I am one of the senior yoga teachers at the Island Yoga Studio. I moved to live in Aruba in 2016 however, I was born and raised in Sweden (where life was a little colder)! I enjoy teaching a dynamic fusion of yoga and functional moment with particular passion and focus on attuning the anatomy of the body, mind and spirit. I have been practicing yoga since I was 14 years old, took my first YTT when I was 15 and cannot imagine my life without it! I love to share my creative expression through my yoga practice and teaching. Creating 'movement for life' is a mantra I live by and the accessible method and lens that I share my yoga class sequencing through. During Yoga Girl Retreats and Trainings my primary role is to help and assist on the floor. I'm Rachel's left-hand lady for all her personal needs during programs and I also tip-toe around the room and give the juiciest assists and adjustments. Outside of work I am a fitness enthusiast who loves to play and challenge my body learning new movement patterns. Whether that be flowing on my yoga mat, playing around with pole dancing, killing it in a cross fit class or just a stroll on the beach - I believe you have the capacity to raise your own vibration if you move your body. The quickest, happiest and healthiest way to reach a state of joy and comfort in the body and that's all I want! Can't wait to meet you!x

Marleen Kersloot
Marleen Kersloot

Certified Yoga Teacher

I grew up in the Netherlands and as a little girl I always told my mom I was going to live on a tropical Island – and now here I am! Before yoga, dance was my life, but when it came time for a change, my family and I moved to Aruba and found ourselves right across the street from the beautiful Island Yoga. I got to know Rachel, practiced in the studio every day, and then joined the Yoga Teacher Training in June 2018. Now I teach the Karma flow class at Island Yoga, and still spend my days dancing except now it's in the kitchen while making smoothies for my daughter, or while watching sunsets on the ocean.

Traci Andrushko
Traci Andrushko

Certified Yoga Teacher

After teaching yoga in New Jersey for 7 years (and styling hair for 13) I moved to Aruba to live with my husband who is native to the island. I spent some time practicing at Island Yoga and it felt like a natural fit to start teaching here. If I’m not in the shala teaching or practicing, I’m usually working on my local business, the little fry. It’s a collection of home and children’s accessories that are handmade and hand dyed. And if there is still time left in the day I do my best to make sure it’s something active outside.

Yoga/SUP Yoga Teacher

I first met Rachel in a yoga retreat in Bonaire 2015, but my family has been coming to Aruba for over 20 years so the island was always my home away from home. I feel very connected to the ocean and the water energy here and it always plays a big role in my day. I also love to work with crystals and oracle cards and recently held a Crystal Healing workshop at Island Yoga. It was my grandma who first introduced me to crystals, through her work as a reiki master – family is so important to me and I stay connected with her and my four sisters all the time.

Certified Yoga Teacher

I was invited by Rachel to give Prenatal Classes at her studio as I had the honor to have her in my prenatal and postnatal program with sweet Lea. I also was invited to bring weekly meditation classes into the studio. I feel grateful to be part of the Island Yoga Family. I love to wake up early (I really do !!) to meditate and spend some quiet time outside before getting my son ready for school and heading out the door to teach my morning classes. In the afternoons I make time for family time and self-care so that I am relaxed and present with my evening classes. I also love camping and I am crazy about caterpillars!
